Why are Politicians trying to Erase Government Schooling?

A recent letter writer to a local newspaper asks that question. The answer is - they are not. The Teachers Unions have already done so.

He brings up the voucher system stating, "it uses public funds to educate students in private schools."

So what? These children's parents pay those school taxes. We have Charter Schools (which are public schools), private schools, religious schools, home schools and other configurations. And he misunderstands what "separation of church and state" means. And, BTW, that phrase is not in the Constitution. The phrase was in a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to a friend. It means that the USA has no "official" religion as does the UK (Anglican), Italy (Catholic) and so on.

He goes on to berate pay of Florida government schoolteachers. Well, it well known that Florida kept its schools open while much of the country closed theirs for up to two years. Check to see how many families moved to Florida to take advantage of open schools. Randi Weingarten's Teachers' Unions kept schools closed. And, if providing age-appropriate reading material is book burning - any parent who chooses to have their K - 3 student read pornography can go to a library or bookstore.

Parents have the right to determine what their children are subject to. They want them educated, not indoctrinated. The proper pronoun matches the child's gender at birth. The children belong to parents, not bureaucrats.

The Department of Education was established by Jimmy Carter as a favor to the teachers' unions for their votes. Schools have devolved to where the US is 36th in literacy in the civilized world. Coincidentally, it began to drop from the top 5 in the year the DOE was established. This is a state's rights issue. No DOE is needed.

There is not a word in the Constitution referring to government schools. One wonders where the letter writer thinks Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and much later - Abe Lincoln, were educated, since there were no public schools until Boston began their public schools years later.
