Human Flourishing
Apparently, the world is now in a crisis state whereby depression, anxiety, loneliness, dissatisfaction are making an impact - not only in adults - but in adolescents and children, as well.
In the case of adolescents and children the finger pointing is toward social media - via cell phone addiction. The problem is many of their parents seem almost equally addicted.
Luckily a small New Jersey college is offering a Ph.D. in Happiness Studies. We all know how colleges have been plying Black Studies, Women's Studies and other esoteric studies: gender, sexuality, climate change, etc.
In the past we have had students study the classics - history, geography, math, sciences, languages, etc.
It would seem - in light of current events - that the study of happiness is not a luxury, but a necessity. Centenary University of Hackettstown, New Jersey has offered a Master of Arts in Happiness Studies and is now adding a Ph.D. in the same area. The degree includes psychology, neuroscience, religion, philosophy and so on.
The university encapsulates the studies under the term - "human flourishing."
Makes one almost sorry for having earned a Master of Arts degree in Political Science. There was no option in majoring in Happiness back then, however.
I am hoping that this idea spreads across the country, if not the world. The graduation for the Master of Arts included representatives from 13 countries.
What say you?
